In a lot of these houses the opening itself is a reasonable size and the cheapest improvement is to keep it and rebuild the internals: double hanging where it suits, drawers at the bottom, shelving to the top, and the wasted space above the original rail actually used. Sliding door gear is where the money goes
The doors fitted as standard tend to be light panels on basic track that ends up dragging or jumping within a couple of years. Better rollers and a properly levelled top track are most of the difference between a door you slide without thinking and one you fight with every morning.
Box rooms and the third bedroom
The smallest bedroom on these estates is often too narrow for a standard 600mm deep wardrobe without blocking the door. A shallower carcass with front-to-back hanging, or a run of drawers with hanging above, makes the room work as a bedroom rather than a study by default.
Fixings, again
As with anything in a new build, we check what the wall is before fixing to it. Timber stud, metal stud and dot-and-dab all take different fixings, and a wardrobe carrying a full load of clothes is not something you want hanging off plasterboard alone.
