The question we get asked most in Paisley is which flooring to pick rather than how it gets fitted, and the honest answer depends far more on the room and the household than on the price per square metre.
LVT, laminate or engineered wood
LVT is the most forgiving: warm underfoot, waterproof, quiet, and it suits kitchens, bathrooms and any house with dogs. Laminate is the cheapest per metre and the modern boards look far better than they used to, but it does not like standing water. Engineered wood is real timber and looks it, and it can be sanded back later, which the other two cannot.
Concrete floors and what is in them
A lot of post-war housing in Paisley has a solid ground floor, which brings its own checks. A damp-proof membrane needs to be present and intact, any latex levelling needs to be fully cured before anything goes down, and if there is underfloor heating the floor covering has to be rated for it. Laying a wood floor onto a slab that is still giving off moisture is a slow-motion failure.
Herringbone
Herringbone has gone from unusual to commonly requested, and it does look excellent, but it is worth knowing it takes roughly twice as long to lay and generates more waste. In a small room it can also overwhelm the space. In a hallway or a decent-sized dining room it is hard to beat.
