A lot of Erskine houses from the 1970s still have a bathroom laid out the way it was built, even if the suite has been changed once since. Newer homes in the town tend to have a main bathroom and an en-suite, both fitted to a builder's budget.
Rethinking the original layout
The original bathrooms are compact, with the bath along one wall and the basin and toilet squeezed in beside it. Changing the layout at the first-fix stage, while the pipework is exposed, is when you get the most space back. A walk-in shower or a shower over a shorter bath are the usual options.
En-suites in newer homes
En-suites are often the first room in a newer house to look tired, usually because of a cheap shower tray or enclosure. Replacing the tray, the enclosure and the wall finish, and adding better extraction, makes a small en-suite much more pleasant to use.
